1 - I will share a google document with you that lists potential government customers for
my Mapping/GIS business. I have outsourced the creation of the google doc. Based on the
calls that I have made using that list, it seems to be comprehensive, but it does have
some redundancy. However, from what I've noticed, it is "obvious" redundancy. I have had
others working using this list to make calls and there are notes of those prospects who
are not interested or were reported as leads. Please call everyone who is not listed as
"Not Interested" or "Lead". When you get to the end of a county, make a note that reads
"No one in this county is interested" at the bottom of that county's list. Please start
working with the first county and if the notes indicate that no one is interested, please
go ahead and add the aforementioned note and the end of that county. Please do the same
for subsequent counties that have already been started. I will be monitoring this doc to
check on your progress. 2 - Your ultimate goal is to find the person who does the mapping/GIS for each governmental department on the list and/or who makes the decision to acquire it. It may be the case that the person you end up talking to takes care of multiple departments in that government organization. Find out if that is the case so you don't have to bother with calling those other departments on the list. You will want to note that in the google document. 3 - Never leave a message with a person or on voice mail because you will probably never hear back from them. Get their their name and 10-digit phone number and make a note in the google doc to call them back later. Make those call-backs until you reach them or if after multiple calls, just have to give up on them. 4 - I don't like pushy sales people or sales people who start with a long sales pitch when I can tell from their first sentence or two that I am not interested. As such, I had adopted a simple approach. Once I got in touch the with mapping person or the “decision maker,” I simply said "My name is Charles with Resource Mapping Agency. I was wondering if you need any mapping services or if you already have what you need." However, I no longer think that is a very good strategy. I need someone who is aggressive about convincing prospects that they do need my services. I am not looking for open leads. What I need is for you to give me a lead who has told you they do have a need based on the work you have done to convince them. If that lead results in the prospect hiring me to do a job for them, you will be paid the contract fee. I will post another contract for that work and will probably award it to you. If you are unable to make good progress on making calls and updating the google doc, I will be forced to close our contract. If you decide to close the contract yourself, I will not give you a poor feedback score. I want you to be successful – either for me or for others. Here is a good blog to follow to be more successful in getting work for me: http://www.vitoselling.com/blog/vitos-time 5 - If a prospect is in need, simply say "I'll have a technical representative contact you tomorrow." Make sure that you get their name, their 10-digit phone number and the department in which they work including their city and county and send that information to me. If they ask about pricing, just tell them that the technical representative will need to find out exactly what they want to determine the cost. Again, I am not looking for open leads 6 - You and I will need to Skype about what specifically I do so you can answer any questions they may have. You might end up talking to a GIS expert or a secretary. I have attached "02-22-12 - Information Script" which I used when I first started making calls myself. This is actually a good script when talking to a secretary or “the decision maker” (the VITO) who has money to spend on GIS work, but doesn't really understand the value of having it. In addition to providing end-result data to the customer, I can also get them set up to do the work themselves. 7 - BEFORE APPLYING FOR THIS CONTRACT, please make sure you have at least a basic understanding of the GIS industry. That will provide you with better chances of success if you can answer questions that prospects have. This is the best place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIS This will give you a more general idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrastructure I have a very basic website that also shows you some of what I do. This isn't a very good website so please do not give this out to prospects: http://www.resourcemappingagency.com 8 - WHEN APPLYING FOR THIS CONTRACT, please attach a voice recording of you reading this job description so I can assess your English skills. Many Thanks! Charles |
